Biography:
A founding member of Theatrical Theatrics Productions, Ali returns this year for his third directorial outing with the Company. In 2004 he played the usurping Duke Bronchio and revolted our audiences by licking a plastic parrot whenever he was on stage. In 2005 he took on the role of Sandor Turai, the playwright and visionary behind Rough Crossing’s internal musical. This year he will attempt to play Jeeves whilst directing the play at the same time. No small feat, arguably, but with a brain lubricated by a diet of fish, and Dave Lydon providing support as co-director, nothing is impossible for the magnificent Jeeves.
Last year Ali won Best Newcomer and Best Actor at Nottingham University 2005/06. At the end of the academic year he was elected Theatre Manager and as a result he now has a seat on the committee of the Nottingham University New Theatre, the only completely student-run theatre in England.
His interests include psychedelic trance and reading, and he also has a nascent fascination in architecture. He is currently at Nottingham University reading English, but has spent most of his time in the university’s New Theatre. His debut was in Harold Pinter’s Old Times as Deeley, and he has played three other roles since then. A penchant for growing unsightly facial hair spoils his good nature somewhat. It first surfaced as a moustache grown (supposedly) for Rough Crossing, and developed into a full-blown beard for his role in The Cradle, by Dave Betz-Heinemann. We can only hope he turns up clean-shaven for Come On, Jeeves rehearsals. It’s impossible to take a man with a beard too seriously!
